In a thrilling outdoor sports event, Chinese athlete Toray made headlines by securing third place in the women's super team category at the Gran Canaria Cross-Country race on July 7th, 2015. The race, which took place across the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, is the third stop of the 2015 Super Cross-Country World Tour (UTWT). Toray completed the 125-kilometer course with an elevation gain of 8,500 meters within the 30-hour time limit, finishing in 18 hours, 15 minutes, and 55 seconds.
Despite arriving in a state of jet lag due to lack of rest, Toray pushed through the challenge and impressed fans with her determination. She even managed to finish just 1 hour, 22 minutes, and 28 seconds behind the winner, host athlete Nurija. Known for her resilience, Toray has consistently performed well in ultra-distance cross-country races of 100 kilometers or more, earning multiple medals throughout her career. After the race, she reflected on the difficulty of the course, stating that the steep climbs, challenging terrain, and unique geography made this event significantly harder than any previous 100km races she had participated in.
On the men’s side, Chinese runner Yan Longfei, who recently set a personal best in a 100km cross-country race in January, had to withdraw from the competition due to physical discomfort. The men's super group was won by Lithuanian athlete Guti Gryffinski Sri Lanka, who finished in 14 hours, 23 minutes, and 37 seconds.
The Gran Canaria Cross-Country event, which began in 2003, has grown significantly over the years. The first edition saw only 65 participants, but this year’s race attracted over 1,400 athletes from around the world, highlighting its increasing popularity and prestige in the ultra-running community.
