In 2015, the home furnishings industry is set to see a number of new and updated standards aimed at improving environmental safety and product quality. One of the most significant changes involves the national standard for formaldehyde emissions from interior decoration materials, particularly wood-based panels and their products. This standard, which had been in place since 2002, has now been replaced by a new mandatory national standard that is currently undergoing final approval.
The updated standard introduces more precise testing methods, setting different formaldehyde emission limits based on the type of product. It also classifies products into two categories—E1 and E2—based on the level of formaldehyde released. E1-rated products are safe for direct indoor use, while E2-rated items require additional treatment before they can be used in living spaces.
Another important update came into effect on December 1, 2014: the new national standard for "Ceramic Sheet Sealing Spout." This standard sets stricter limits on metal contaminants, such as lead, antimony, and arsenic, that may leach from faucets. It also improves water-saving performance and enhances requirements for sealing, adhesion, and corrosion resistance in shower heads and hand showers.
For many years, one of the biggest challenges in furniture environmental protection has been how to test for harmful substances without damaging or dismantling the furniture itself. Consumers often suspect that their furniture may contain harmful chemicals, but they hesitate to take action due to fears of costly damage and difficulty proving their case.
Currently, the “dryer†method is commonly used for environmental testing, which involves cutting furniture into small pieces for analysis. However, a new draft standard proposes using the climate chamber method instead. This approach simulates real-life conditions by placing the furniture in a controlled environment and measuring air quality. This method is more accurate, less destructive, and provides more reliable results. It tests the entire piece of furniture rather than just a sample, making it more comprehensive and consumer-friendly.
By adopting these improved testing methods, both manufacturers and consumers can benefit from better transparency and safer products. For more updates on China's furniture industry, visit the official website of Xianghe Furniture City.
