In 2013, Japan's packaging industry output value rebounded

Japan's packaging industry ranks third globally, following the United States and China. However, since reaching a peak in 1995, the industry has experienced a general decline. In 2013, there was a slight improvement in the sector. The total output value of packaging products reached 5.61 trillion yen, marking a 2.1% increase from the previous year's 5.49 trillion yen. Additionally, the production volume of packaging products rose to 18.76 million tons, up by 1.7 million tons compared to the previous year. These figures reflect a modest recovery after years of decline. The data from 2009 to 2013 on both the output value and production volume of Japanese packaging products are presented in Table 1 and Table 2, respectively. From a production value perspective, paper packaging remained the most significant segment in Japan, with an output value of 2.35 trillion yen in 2013—an increase of 3.2% from the previous year's 2.27 trillion yen. It accounted for 41.8% of the total packaging output value. Plastic packaging followed closely, with a value of 1.66 trillion yen, representing a 2.3% growth and 29.7% of the overall market. Metal packaging contributed 944.6 billion yen, reflecting a 0.8% increase from 937.2 billion yen in 2012, and accounted for 16.8% of the total. Glass packaging, however, saw a slight decrease, with an output value of 124.7 billion yen, down 1.1% from the previous year, and making up 2.2% of the market. Wooden packaging also declined slightly, reaching 139.8 billion yen, a 0.6% drop from 140.7 billion yen, contributing 2.5% to the total. Other types of packaging had an output value of 388.3 billion yen, a 0.8% decrease from 391.5 billion yen, accounting for 6.9% of the market. These details are summarized in Table 3, offering a comprehensive view of the Japanese packaging industry's performance between 2009 and 2013.
