Creative packaging becomes a springboard for resource reduction, reuse and growth

Queasy Pouch launched a 3 oz. concentrate package for its No. 5 cleaner line this summer, which is attached to a ready-to-use 24-ounce bottle. The patent-pending bag-in-bag packaging method makes the filling process no longer confusing and facilitates product display.

Unprecedented Squeasy Pouch is a launching platform for the EcoSierra bottled cleaning product line and it is also a springboard for innovation driven by other packaging products.

When emerging companies EcoSierra, Madison, and WI recruit MaxPax LLC as their contract packaging manufacturer, they get more than just outsourced production of cleaning products. As part of its new relationship, EcoSierra soon submitted a new bag that it was applying for: The Squeasy Pouch, which was quickly accepted by the brand owners.

EcoSierra launched its 24-oz. PET bottled fifth-in-one cleaner in June 2014, and this flexible package is the basis of the production line. The Squeasy Pouch is attached to the bottleneck and contains 3 ounces of concentrated detergent. When the consumer adds water to the concentrated product for dilution, it can provide the consumer with an additional 24 ounces of product. The total effective usage of the product is 48 ounces, and the online price of the bottle is 4.49 US dollars. Products are sold through small stores in the southern Wisconsin region, but most are sold online.

The Squeasy Pouch is different from a typical pouch or tube container. It uses a unique structure that provides a great deal of convenience for a troublesome proposition that it is easier to transfer liquids from a bag to a narrow-necked bottle.

With Squeasy Pouch, the user can cut the tip of the bag and insert it into the spray bottle. The user then squeezes the bag so that the rip-open bag bursts. It is essentially an inner bag.

The use of the bag as a package and the added value it brings to the company are phenomenal, but EcoSierra's plans for this pouch are even more striking. Less than six months after the launch of the product, EcoSierra transferred all of its business to the practicality and flexibility provided by Squeasy Pouch.

“We hope it is not just a home green product,” said Jon Klahr, director of marketing at EcoSierra. “We want a product that has a smaller [carbon] footprint and is cost-effective. MaxPax has been leading us towards Squeasy Pouch, which is consistent with the starting point of the sustainable model we want to achieve.”

Interestingly, it wasn’t until EcoSierra learned about the concept of Squeasy Pouch.

The concentrate package is attached to the main container. Klahr believes that the bag eliminates the defects caused by previous competitors' containers. In his opinion, they did not achieve the same effect. "What we do is completely different," he pointed out. "I have repeatedly observed the demonstration and use of the bag and I have never found a leak."

The package also provides a resource-saving production solution for bottled concentrates.

It is this lean, green, and forward-thinking flexibility that has become synonymous with EcoSierra, which impacts the environment through clean, environmentally friendly cleaning products that cost less than competitors.

The company sells handmade soaps and hand sanitizer replacements, but these use standard stand-up pouches with screw caps to reseal. Its Squeasy Pouch bagged concentrate has been developed along with other products.

Outstanding convenience

Klahr pointed out that the Squeasy Pouch connected to the bottle was welcomed by potential customers in terms of overall weight, reduced storage and transportation costs, and shelf requirements. Squeasy Pouch is our biggest selling point and it is different from other detergents.

“Now, our main target groups are large stores that are considering introducing new products and offering new products for the market. At present, we are negotiating with them to gain a foothold in the market.”

Klahr said one of the challenges the company faces is consumer education. The specific bag graphic explains the product information of Squeasy Pouch, which is why the detailed six-step replacement instructions are printed on the front of the bag in text and graphics (see picture).

"The product does not leak, flow out or how it will penetrate the inner membrane after it has been inserted into the bottle," explained Klahr. “If everyone understands how it works, I think we will see a lot of new customers. It's not a gimmick, it's not just a typical bag. Its patent part is basic, simple, and great.”

Its new detergent and packaging line is arranged in the center of the company's website to highlight its detergents and related products made from natural botanical raw materials, as well as packaging made from materials that are environmentally responsible (including flexible and recyclable packaging). .

However, its production of additional bag products has “been really started and has become our main source of income,” Klahr said. “Our consumers are also environmentally conscious, and they soon see the bagged enrichment concept as environmentally friendly.

"We would be very happy if they only buy concentrated bags," he said, adding that the product is priced at $1.89 per bag.

Brand development platform

It was the concept of Squeasy Pouch that allowed the company to consider using condensed packaging instead of other forms, and EcoSierra now sees it as a packaging platform for brand expansion.

"Before Squeasy Pouch, we did not produce concentrated packaging," Klahr said. “Now, we are looking for various applications for it. I feel that after two years, the bag will become our main product. I can imagine the unique market that we have opened up using this type of concept because it is widely used. ."

A 5 or 6-bottle joint cleanser package is in production and is expected to be purchased directly or online before Christmas. Klahr believes that those joint packaging will also appeal to consumers, and they all want a spray bottle of their own.

"We are looking for something like this exciting product," Klahr said. Another point of view extends the concept literally by using a large outer bag and filling the Squeasy Pouch with a concentrate. "The user fills the outer bag with water and then bursts the inner bag to dilute the solution to the right amount," he explained. “We are also seeking opportunities for a free brand and an industry market. If we do this, it will bring us a lot of positive influence.”
