Integrated oscilloscope to make five common debugging tasks more efficient
As the complexity continues to rise, practice has proven that modern mixed-signal design and designers can be described as opponents. Embedded design engineers must wear a few hats to efficiently diagnose and debug the latest designs. This means they need to deal with the following activities: designing the power supply, measuring power efficiency, using radio in the design, or having to track the source of noise that could threaten the intended operation.
Moreover, debugging today's designs requires working in a mixed-domain environment, from DC to RF, including analog and digital signals, serial buses, and parallel buses. In the not too distant past, this required a full table of instruments, each with its own interface and setup requirements.
However, just as embedded test requirements are changing, test instruments are changing, most notably the emergence of integrated oscilloscopes. In the oscilloscope user survey, we found that in addition to their oscilloscopes, engineers report that they need to use the following instruments multiple times per month:

This means that the oscilloscope – the core instrument of most design workbenches – must provide designers with a comprehensive set of features and features that enable efficient inspection and debugging of embedded designs. To meet this need, test equipment manufacturers are now offering integrated oscilloscopes that combine multiple instruments into a small, portable package with the ability to view both time domain and frequency domain information.
One of the newest integrated oscilloscopes on the market is the Tektronix MDO3000 (Figure 1), which combines six instruments simultaneously, including the industry's only independent RF acquisition system built into the oscilloscope. Other features include logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, arbitrary function generators, and digital voltmeters (DVMs). And how does such an instrument work in practice? Can it really replace multiple independent instruments? To try to answer these questions, we use this new integrated oscilloscope to accomplish the following five common tasks, including:
1. Find abnormal signals
2. Verify serial and parallel bus design
3. Search for noise sources
4. Use the noisy signal for margin testing
5. Verify switching power supply design
As always, the benefits you get may vary according to your needs and requirements – be sure to review the technical data sheets and compare them to your intended application. As prices fall, reaching the level of "standard" digital oscilloscopes, and with the popularity of wireless technology in embedded systems, it is safe to say that integrated oscilloscopes can clearly represent the future of oscilloscope development.
