Digital Multimeter Measurement

(1) Preparation

Multimeters come in various types, and it's essential to prepare properly before using the CD4050BE. Take time to familiarize yourself with the functions of the switch, dial, jacks, and the different measurement ranges. Check if the red and black probes are correctly connected for 2500V measurements. Typically, the red probe should be inserted into the "+" jack, while the black one goes into the "-" jack. Some multimeters have a specific high-voltage terminal for DC 2500V measurements. In such cases, the black probe remains in the common port, and the red probe is connected to the high-voltage terminal when measuring high voltages. Always double-check the connections to avoid damage or inaccurate readings.

(2) Voltage Measurement

Measuring voltage involves two main types: direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC). Each requires a slightly different approach.

For DC voltage measurement (such as testing batteries or devices like a walkman), follow these steps:

First, insert the black probe into the "COM" port of the multimeter, and the red probe into the "VΩ" port. Turn the range selector to the DC voltage setting labeled "V–". Then, set the range higher than the expected voltage value (note that the numbers on the dial represent maximum ranges).

Next, connect the probes to the power source or battery terminals, ensuring stable contact. Once connected, read the value directly from the display. If the screen shows "1_", it means the selected range is too low. If the symbol "L" appears on the left side of the reading, it indicates reversed polarity—meaning the red probe is connected to the negative terminal instead of the positive one.

For AC voltage measurement, the process is similar but with a few key differences. Insert the black probe into the "COM" port and the red probe into the "V~" port. Switch the range selector to the AC voltage mode ("V~") and adjust it to a range higher than the estimated value. Connect the probes to the AC power source (no polarity to worry about), and read the value from the display.

No matter whether you're measuring AC or DC voltage, always prioritize safety. Avoid touching the metal parts of the probes directly, and ensure the multimeter is in good condition before use. Taking these precautions can prevent accidents and ensure accurate results.
