The girls have been fascinated by flowers lately, and I thought it would be a delightful idea to bring some art into our garden. Even though spring has been quite chilly, last weekend we finally experienced one of those warmer days that made it perfect to step outside and get creative. I enjoy painting with the girls outdoors because I don't have to worry too much about making a mess.
They were absolutely thrilled about this activity, and I wasn’t concerned about how the final artwork would turn out. The joy of exploring what kinds of effects could be achieved by pressing flowers into paint was enough excitement for us all.
To set things up, I rolled out a large sheet of paper, prepared some paint mixed with a touch of glitter for that extra sparkle, and gathered a bunch of flowers that were starting to wilt—ones I’d originally planned to toss out.
We were genuinely surprised by how beautiful the prints turned out. The roses, especially, stood out because their shapes were so clearly visible. It was such a satisfying experience that we decided it would be wonderful to create some cards from these prints.
When attempting this yourself, it’s best to use roses that are still fairly closed and press them gently onto the paper to achieve a clear impression. The end result was an explosion of color that reminded me of vibrant wrapping paper. Some petals even got embedded in the paint, adding a fascinating texture to the artwork.
This project was so enjoyable that we’re already looking forward to trying it again with other types of flowers, perhaps even some blossoms. Though our initial goal wasn’t to produce a specific outcome, we ended up creating a Mother’s Day card by printing a few colorful blooms onto green cardstock. I believe it will make a charming gift.
As I reflect on the day, I can’t help but feel inspired by how simple yet engaging this activity was. It’s moments like these that remind me why process art is so valuable—it’s not just about the finished product but the journey and discovery along the way. I hope to share more ideas like this in the future, as there’s always something new to learn and create with just a little creativity and imagination.
