On October 25th, McDonald's China announced ScaleforGood "a small step in our world, a big step in the world" sustainable development action plan. Among them, McDonald's China announced three green packaging action plans to use packaging more responsibly while ensuring the customer's dining experience, continuously optimizing and reducing packaging materials.
Action 1: Actively reduce the use of packaging materials
In 2015, McDonald's China successively cancelled the packaging boxes of Mai Spicy Chicken Legs, Maixiang Fish and Banchuan Chicken Fort, and changed them into single-layer wrapping paper, reducing the amount of paper used in related products packaging by nearly 80%.
For French fries boxes, pie boxes, hamburger wrappers, napkins, and happy food cartons, McDonald's also optimized the cutting process and size design, reducing the amount of paper needed by about 20%.
Action 2: Reduce plastic
Beginning on November 1, 2018, McDonald's China will pilot a “sippy-free cup lid†and a non-active straw supply program in 10 restaurants in Beijing to encourage consumers to reduce the use of straws.
As early as 2007, McDonald's China took the lead in providing paper take-out bags, which has reduced more than 2 billion plastic bags in a decade. In addition, all restaurants have also replaced the wheat whirlwind plastic cup and adjusted the size of the knife and fork to reduce the use of plastic.
Action 3: 100% use of international forest certified base paper
By 2020, 100% of the paper food packaging used by McDonald's China will come from the Forest Management Board (FSC) or Forest Certification Scheme (PEFC) certified base paper to support sustainable forest management.
