About e-book: Analysis of BenQ K60 optimal combination design inside story

Electronic products often seem to move forward in a non-linear fashion. For most consumers, special e-books or e-readers have only recently become popular, but the seeds of this product have been sown long ago. Softbook from SoftbookPress is a product that has been forgotten for a long time. It is one of the earliest e-book devices and was the object of our dismantling in 1998. About eight years later, in 2006, Sony introduced the first e-book device, the Sony Reader PRS-500. This product uses the latest electrophoretic display (EPD) that was launched at the time, which has the advantages of low power consumption and high readability, and is popularized by the manufacturer EInk. At this point, consumer interest in such devices is still very limited, but when the online bookstore giant Amazon entered the market with Kindle readers in late 2007, the e-book market began to heat up.

In the following years, Amazon (Amazon) launched many upgraded products based on the original Kindle. In 2009, Amazon's main competitor Barnes & Noble also launched its own e-reader product Nook. By mid-2010, the list of e-reader suppliers has been increasing (some brand names are very loud, and some have begun to deliver products).

This article introduces the entry-level e-reader product K60 launched by BenQ. The main target of this product that only provides Wi-Fi function is the Asian market. Compared with the current leading products, it can be found that the main characteristics of K60 seem to be the optimized combination of similar products of Amazon, Sony and Barnes & Noble.

The K60 also uses the very popular EPD display, with a diagonal size of 6.1 inches and 16 gray levels. In view of the widespread popularity of touch screens, BenQ ’s EPD is also equipped with a capacitive touch screen coating, and several control keys can still be seen on the bottom and one side. The data transmission for book download is realized through USB and 802.11b / gWLAN, and supports the microSD memory card provided by the user.

From the end user's point of view, the main feature of the K60 is the ease of downloading and purchasing Chinese and Japanese publications, as well as the English books found on GoogleBooks. Compared with many existing e-book reader products, K60 is very different in terms of component suppliers.

At present, the biggest advantage of e-readers is the "e-paper" display that is not eye-catching. So far, such displays have almost used EPD screens produced by E-Ink. The K60 display is a brand new variety, using the 800x600 electrophoretic display screen of SiPix. The glass capacitive touch screen from Phanix Microelectronics (PIXCIR) is directly bound to the EPD. AU Optronics (AUOptronics) module uses a pair of Pixcir touch screen controller IC (TangoS32), data is fed into the clock through Atmel's 8-bit microcontroller (ATmega168PA), and the display driver is Orise Technology (Orise) company Products (model unknown).

The K60's application core is Samsung's 32 / 16-bit ARM9 processor (S3C2416), which performs all major functions. The processor is located on a single printed circuit board used in the design. The supporting chips include independently packaged Hynix DDR2SDRAM (H5MS1G62MFP) and Samsung's MLCNAND flash memory (KLM2G1DEDD). The latter is also used in Samsung's Wave.

The Wi-Fi module should be a product from Taiwan Huanlong Electric Company (USI) (WM-G-MT-03). This off-the-shelf subsystem is implemented with MediaTek's single-chip 802.11b / gWLAN (MT5921). This kind of MediaTek component is often used in Chinese mobile phones. It is not surprising that it appears in BenQ products.

[The peripheral support devices for this IC also include Wi-Fi amplifiers (SST12LP14E from Silicon Storage Technology), gallium arsenide SPDT switches (NECUPG2158), and serial EEPROMs (S-93L66A from Seiko Instruments).

AUO's EPD controller (AUO-K1900) contains a low-power FPGA solution provided by SiliconBlue Technologies. According to our survey, this company is a new startup in the field of mobile and consumer devices. This solution also shows that a controller is needed to support the new display without using a custom ASIC. The peripheral circuits of this display controller include Taiwan Macronix (Macronix) serial flash memory (MX25L8005M2C and MX25L4005A) and EtronTech's SDRAM (EM686165).

Look at the simulation part again. TI provides major power management devices. The 1.5A lithium-ion battery charger (BQ24075) can charge the battery via the USB port, and the main power rail is managed by the TPS650240. The single built-in speaker and stereo jack are driven by Realtek's audio codec + stereo amplifier (ALC5624). Due to the obvious influence of the neighboring regions, this component combination mainly based on suppliers in Taiwan is not surprising, and its supply chain overlaps with mainstream US and Japanese manufacturers is also very limited.

Finally, let's take a look at the selling price of K60. The current retail price of the K60 is about $ 250. According to Western standards, this price seems unreasonable for a device that lacks a 3G connection, but it is not high compared to Sony and other companies that only provide USB functions. How much is out. Of course, the entry-level products launched by some mainstream manufacturers at low prices recently may cause greater pressure on BenQ, but we estimate that the production cost of K60 hardware should be less than $ 100, so there is still a lot of room for operation. The SiPiX / Pixcir screen is undoubtedly the most expensive part of the hardware. The cost reduction of the EPD screen and BenQ's use of standard products and programmable products instead of ASICs as much as possible will help promote the reduction of the overall cost.

There is a lot of controversy about whether another e-reader is needed, especially the recent "tablet" phenomenon promoted by the iPad, but for now, BenQ is at least confident of achieving regional success. Electronic readers (including pleasing EPDs) manufactured for special purposes and inherently low-cost structures (relying on product-specific low performance) make e-book products significantly different from tablet computers. However, the e-reader industry may be at an important crossroads. With the popularity of more expensive but more flexible tablet products, the e-reader's ability to survive adversity remains to be seen.
